Always tinkering with cars. Studying to be a mechanic. He played basketball. He was social, handsome, popular with the girls. Tall, thin, 135 pounds. He liked to wear earrings — hoops and diamond studs, mostly. Close with his two brothers — one younger, one older. His mother told them to stick together, called them The Three Musketeers.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">These days, though, it’s hard to get a sense of any of that. Pedro L. Cuevas, 16, is a blank slate. Paralyzed. Mute. In a wheelchair.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">His arms curl up to his chest, fingers balled into his palms. Legs are skinny from fatigue, feet turned in. Head cocked permanently to the right, mouth slack-jawed. He can’t interact with his family, and he’s never held his 8-month-old son, Ian Cuevas.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">Pedro’s condition is the result of viral encephalitis, a virus-related brain inflammation that came on in November after an appendectomy at a Puerto Rican hospital.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">Sometimes, though, he follows his family members with his eyes. He grunts. He moves his right hand a little bit and fidgets his feet.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">All those things are an improvement. He didn’t used to do them. That gives his family hope.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">“On the outside, those probably seem like little things,” said his mother, Nancy Matos, said as she tended to her son at a three-decker in Worcester’s Green Hill Park neighborhood. “But it’s a lot for us.”</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">And, they believe, those improvements will continue. To spur them along, the family plans to buy Pedro treatments in a hyperbaric chamber. On Aug. 12 at 6 p.m. they will hold a benefit at the American Legion Main South Post to raise money for the specialized therapy, which comes with a $7,000 price tag and isn’t covered by health insurance.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">The treatments include 44 consecutive three-hour sessions in an oxygenated cylinder. Research has shown that it promotes the circulation of blood and oxygen in damaged tissue areas. The chance of full recovery, though, is slim.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">“He could come back to us 100 percent, 50 percent,” Ms. Matos said, motioning to Pedro, sitting beside her on the couch. “Or he could stay like this.”</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">Ms. Matos’ life in the past nine months has been a cyclone of pain and uncertainty.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">Last November, Pedro experienced abdominal pains. Complications arose after his operation: rashes, migraines, a 104-degree fever, memory loss and nonsensical mutterings. Then, a 23-day coma. When he woke up, he was not speaking and not moving.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">In April, his family flew him to the continental United States in pursuit of more advanced medical treatment. These days, they’re staying with Pedro’s godmother, Iris Figueroa, in Worcester.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">Pedro has regular physical therapy and has to be cared for as if he were an infant.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">Ms. Matos bathes him, feeds him pureed food through a tube and shifts him from the bed to the wheelchair to the sofa — and back again.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">“I do everything for him,” she said. “It has changed my life completely.”</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">Emotionally, it’s been an incredible drain. “It’s like you’re walking, you’re living, but everything’s destroyed inside,” she said.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">Pedro’s siblings and longtime girlfriend, 21-year-old Darcy Pacheco, have been similarly stunned.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">“It’s been hard seeing my brother like this,” said Miguel Cuevas, 15, Pedro’s younger brother. “He used to be normal.”</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">Ms. Pacheco, meanwhile, has to raise her baby without a father.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">The young woman said she loves Pedro and would like to marry him someday.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">“I’m gonna be there for him,” she said as the curly-haired infant wriggled in her arms. “I wanna help him.”</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">Nearby, Ms. Matos motioned subtly to Pedro’s brothers. Without speaking, they lifted his stiff body off the couch and seated him in his wheelchair.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">“We’re willing to do whatever it takes,” his mother explained as she adjusted his feet in the chair’s stirrups and straightened his T-shirt and jeans. “We’re willing to go to Italy, to Spain. We’re up for anything.”</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">She turned to Pedro, leaning close to her son’s narrow face.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">“Right?”</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">He swallowed, moved his mouth and followed her eyes with his.</p><p class="gnt_ar_b_p" style="margin: 14px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">She gave him a wan smile.</p></div><div class="gnt_ss gnt_ss__cm__tp" data-g-r="base_sc" data-ss-d="They miss the way he used to be. <div class="author" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Acumin Pro", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-weight: 700; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Acumin Pro", sans-serif; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px;">
Boats both rowed and sailed converge on a distinctly Maine island: a hump of rock, with some scrubs of trees but mostly barren, a simple residence located at its central, northernmost point. The sailboats anchor in the turquoise sea; the rowboats dragged up by their mates clutter the drab sand of the shore; and several indistinct figures make their way to the house surrounded by a makeshift maze of stone walls, a muted, impassive sky above.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Acumin Pro", sans-serif; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px;">
It is a crisp, solemn depiction, the island version of one of life’s few sureties — death.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Acumin Pro", sans-serif; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px;">
But the 1939, egg tempera and oil on hardboard, “Island Funeral,” is also illustrative of its artist’s range of style and emotion. Described aptly as an “ideal marriage of illustration and modern painting,” it is one of the central pieces of “N.C. Wyeth: New Perspectives,” at the Portland Museum of Art. On view through January 12, 2020, the traveling exhibit is the first major retrospective of the artist’s work in nearly 50 years.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Acumin Pro", sans-serif; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px;">
The patriarch of his artistically gifted family — most notably his son, the celebrated realist Andrew Wyeth — N.C. Wyeth was one of the most commercially successful artists of his time. Yet despite — or more likely because of — that fact, he was largely shunned by fine art institutions and traditional art critics.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Acumin Pro", sans-serif; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px;">
And while some of his commissions, including those made for The Saturday Evening Post, the National Biscuit Company and Bank of America, have an unmistakably slick, commercial feel, the PMA exhibit depicts his diversity of style, tone and color, as well as his changing perspectives over the course of his life.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Acumin Pro", sans-serif; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px;">
To that end, the show, that was curated by PMA’s Jessica May and Christine B. Podmaniczky of the Brandywine River Museum of Art, is laid out in five distinct chapters.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Acumin Pro", sans-serif; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px;">
Born in Needham, Massachusetts, in 1882, Wyeth early became a pupil of Howard Pyle, who urged him to visit the American west for inspiration; indeed, Wyeth did, and spent his late teens and early 20s working as a cowboy moving cattle and doing ranch chores, while also visiting the Navajo in Arizona. In 1903, at just 20 years old, his first commission appeared on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post. “Bucking Bronco” was a rollicking depiction of just that, and Wyeth went on to do many more oil on canvases interpreting the wild, boisterous nature of the west.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Acumin Pro", sans-serif; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px;">
In contrast to these were his Native American pieces of the same time period. For instance, “In the Crystal Depths,” portrays a solitary Navajo, head bowed, navigating an elegantly detailed canoe along a calm river, while “The Silent Burial” shows a figure standing solemnly, yet resolutely, beside a hole dug in the snowy earth; he wears only a loincloth and appears to be eyeless.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Acumin Pro", sans-serif; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px;">
By 1911, the established illustrator began a series of commissioned pieces to accompany editions of classic literature. Most notable among these — making him famous, while also considered by some to be his best work — was a set for Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island.”</div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">Varying
in scope, size and subject matter, the unifying element of these
pieces is one of the oldest artistic mediums known to humans: clay.</span></span></span></div>
<div style="background: transparent; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">“<span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">What
does clay say and where is it going?” asked Alice Abrams, exhibit
co-chair and co-founder. “It keeps expanding in its creative reach
and its ability to say different things.”</span></span></span></div>
<div style="background: transparent; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">It’s
a question that the Lexington Arts and Crafts Society has posed for
more than 20 years.</span></span></span></div>
<div style="background: transparent; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">The
answer — resulting in 10 exhibits over the past two decades — has
varied and evolved with the times, politics, popular culture and
fashion. This year is no exception, with the 10th Biennial State of
Clay representing everything from women’s role in society, to
family values, to ancient archetypes; as well as the inherent beauty,
versatility and classic function of the age-old medium.</span></span></span></div>
<div style="background: transparent; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">One
of the region’s foremost shows dedicated to clay, the Biennial
features the work of 70 Massachusetts artists. It will be on display
at the Society’s space in Lexington, Mass. through June 3; the
exhibit will also feature an artist reception and talk with juror
Emily Zilber on May 6 from 2 to 5 p.m.</span></span></span></div>

<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">At

Pierre Gooding’s family, Harlem had always been home. But after he

Electoral College process pan out—he didn’t consider that one day
he’d be reinvesting himself in Harlem.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Growing
up in Haverhill, he was able to capitalize on his talents in debate,
teaching and athletics: He participated in the Johns Hopkins’
Center for Talented Youth, as well as the Princeton University Summer
Institute for the Gifted; he scored a 1,020 on his SATs in just the
8th grade; and he ran track and cross country and served as captain
of his high school tennis team.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">But
law was the goal. As he puts it, “I always liked to interact with
people, and I thought law was a great way to do that.”</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">He
went on to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania with a
bachelor’s degree in political science and sociology in 2006, and
with a corporate law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law
School in 2011. He served on many boards and committees throughout
his college years—including student government—and he also earned
his master’s degree in teaching from Pace University in 2008.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">All
the while, others around him saw a reformer in the making. He was
eventually approached by the nonprofit Teach for America, whose corps
of teachers provides education in low-income schools. It was then
that Gooding thought: What better chance to give back than to
children in Harlem, where he was born?</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">He
saw the potential to provide his expertise in other ways, as well; he
served as legal counsel for Teach For America’s inaugural alumni
association, and also helped to create the organization’s current
legal structure.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">“It
seemed like a powerful opportunity,” he says, although he adds that
his parents were at first apprehensive about the teaching aspect,
because it meant he would had to defer law school. “For me it was a
no-brainer.”</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">But
returning to the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City to
teach English as a Second Language (ESL), he was dismayed to see that
not much had changed since his youth. Affordable housing was paltry,
unemployment was in the double digits and a good education was hard
to attain.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">The
latter particularly struck him: His mother had sacrificed to provide
him with opportunities he likely wouldn’t have had if they’d
stayed in Harlem. For example, just on a basic literacy level, there
are currently just four working libraries and two librarians in the
Harlem school district.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">“That
has always drawn me to New York City: The need for education reform
in the place I was supposed to go to school,” says Gooding, adding
that, more than 25 years later, “the place I was supposed to go to
school is still struggling.”</span></span></div>
<h2 class="western" style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-top: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<strong><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></strong></h2>
<h2 class="western" style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-top: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<strong><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Many issues to tackle</span></strong></h2>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Education
is just one vital element to be addressed, he says.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">He
also notes a 13 percent unemployment rate, record incidences of
homelessness and a widespread housing crisis. Throughout Harlem and
New York City, outsiders are buying up prime investment properties
and causing rental prices to “skyrocket,” he says. In the end,
that creates a vicious cycle that perpetuates other social problems
such as access to education and decent-paying jobs.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">He
suggests aggressive policy reforms that ensure locals are not priced
out of Harlem housing, and that incentivize new companies taking root
in the neighborhood to hire locally and invest in training and
re-training.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">“You
have to ensure that longtime residents can benefit from the changes
that come with gentrification,” Gooding says.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Then
there are the simpler micro changes that can help to improve
day-to-day life. In particular, he laments the axing of the “Fair
Fares” subsidy program, which allowed qualifying lower income
residents to purchase discounted subway tickets. Meanwhile, the
neighborhood has to push to retain its identity. (You may recall the
firestorm over rebranding Harlem as “SoHa” earlier this year.)</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Looking
ahead, Gooding says there are a plethora of opportunities for
public-private partnerships that could promote technological advances
and even agricultural projects in Harlem. One example of the latter
is Street Leafs, a community-based hydroponics and vertical farming
effort that he has been in discussions with.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">“You
have to be creative, proactive, see what’s going on, respond, and
make sure that what you want to see happen is in conjunction with
what the community wants,” he says.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Ultimately,
helping to promote a better life in Harlem comes down to a “personal
fight” for him.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">“Every
Harlemite deserves the opportunity to receive a great education, a
great job and affordable housing—right here,” Gooding says. “To
make that happen, Harlem needs elected officials that reflect the
values of the community.”</span></span></div>

<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">For
30 days, he was essentially a stow- away on a container ship set on a
course thousands of miles across the open sea.</span></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 0.14in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">The
moody ocean vacillated between violence and tranquility; the scenery
was at times turbulent, blissful, and teeming with life — but
whatever each day brought, the experience was endlessly powerful and
life-altering.</span></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 0.14in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Maine
sgraffito artist Tim Christensen, bound for Sydney, Australia, spent
hours above deck studying the changing pat- terns of the water, the
sky and the wildlife, then rendering his observations in dozens of
sketches and notes, filling a journal to the bindings.</span></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 0.14in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">His
trip is chronicled in the solo exhibit “30 Days at Sea,” now on
view at the Center for Maine Craft Gallery in Gardiner. Through Nov.
19, viewers can experience dozens of Christensen’s prints, world-
renowned clay work, and the weather- worn notebook that made the
passage with him across the ocean.</span></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 0.14in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;">“I
see the entire trip as one great performance piece,” said
Christensen, who also blogged throughout the journey. “I made some
of the best work of my career on this trip.”</span></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 0.14in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">For
those lucky enough to travel to Australia from the states, there is
often an initial dread in the logistics of arriving safely Down
Under: The time-intensive- ness of a 24-hour-plus flight; the exhaus-
tion of ensuing jet lag; the instant culture shock upon stepping off
the plane.</span></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 0.14in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">But
Christensen saw a whole different opportunity. When he received an
invite to the annual “Smoke on the Water” conference at the
Ceramic Centre for Excellence, Inc., in Queensland, Australia, he
began casting around for ways to turn what could be a cumbersome
travel experience into something more creativity-inspiring.</span></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 0.14in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">He
had larger, more underlying rea- sons, as well. The Maine native has
long been a steward of the environment, doing whatever he can to be
conscientious and courteous while minimizing his impact. He lamented
that he’s already seen signif- icant changes to the Earth in his
lifetime.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">“I’m
going to see the demise of 40 to 60 percent of the animals I grew up
with,” he said. “I’m writing a requiem for things I really
love.”</span><br />

<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">“Overall the show for me is about the roots
and ideas that come from reading,” said Lookerse, “and so each piece is somehow
tied to a specific book or story or legend or myth.”<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">The exhibit will be on display at Fruitlands
Museum in Harvard, Mass., through August 20; the work was crafted during
Lookerse’s 2017 artist-in-residence at both Fruitlands and The Old Manse in
Concord.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Lookerse, who describes himself as a “reader
who does not know how to write,” creates complex, thought-provoking pieces that
intertwine elements of classic literature and religious practices, and explore
what he calls the “incongruities” between the physical and metaphysical planes.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">“A huge influence of my work is looking at
western art history and the ways in which religion and philosophy intermix,”
said the artist. “I’m trying to come full circle and think about all of these
different disciplines, all of these different ideas, and see how it works
within the context of the literature pieces.”<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">For example, in one piece he cut and folded
pages from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “Nature and Other Essays,” arranging them in a
mandala pattern that could be a flower — or an ornately-decorated cathedral
window.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Meanwhile, Henry David Thoreau’s journal is
transformed into a labyrinth encircling and curling around a stark praying
bench.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Other pieces in the show — around 30 in total
— include a wall of 50 black icons with a kneeling bench, and rocks of various
sizes, colors and shapes encased under glass domes.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Lookerse, who identifies as a sculptor,
painter and performance artist (among other descriptors,) embraces abstraction.
Words, after all, he said, are just that.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">“Abstraction as a whole I think is really
misunderstood outside of the academic art culture,” he said.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">He added that, “There’s a level of absurdity
through all art, and then there’s the artist asking the audience to have a bit
of faith in what they’re presenting,” whether that’s purely enjoying the
aesthetics, thinking about its implications, or developing their own
interpretation.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Lookerse’s particular style of abstraction
arises not only from his themes, but his process.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">He describes himself as “a little like a Swiss
Army knife,” using whatever tools and materials he needs in the studio —
manipulating them to explore their limitations and figure out new ways to use
them – to bring tangibility to an idea. There’s a lot of tinkering; a lot of
mistakes.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">“It’s a process of exploring and trying new
things,” he said. And eventually, “you find a little nougat of ‘Hmmm, that was
interesting.’”<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Its
history and culture are a rich fusion of influences; its people are
proud, innovative, and environmentally fastidious; its picturesque
harbor greets looming mountains that are home to an array of exotic
and endangered plants and animals. Many factors make Wellington a
unique and unrivaled location. That’s what ultimately convinced
professor of organizational studies Michael Elmes that it would be a
prime spot for one of WPI’s project centers. After visiting the
country as a Fulbright Scholar in 2005, he championed the Wellington
Project Center, and students have been visiting and working there for
four years.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;">“It’s
really quite a dynamic place for being such a small country,” says
Elmes, who runs the center with assistant teaching professor Ingrid
Shockey. “It’s a great place to visit, and it’s a great place
to do interesting, challenging projects.”</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">In
those four years, IQP teams have been involved with more than two
dozen such initiatives—among them, researching endangered dolphins,
investigating prospects for hydrogen fuel, studying the food rituals
of native birthday parties, raising awareness of tsunamis, and
examining flood and climate change.</span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Mechanical
engineering major Paige Myatt ’17, who spent the winter of 2016 at
the center, said of the experience, “I felt like I’d found
another home.” Students are very often struck by what Elmes calls
the starkly beautiful natural environment, plus the country’s high
happiness index and quality of life. “They do have some kind of
secret formula there,” he says.</span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The
center works with diverse sponsors, from the Māori communities, to
the Greater Wellington Regional Council, to the Museum of New Zealand
Te Papa Tonga-rewa. Elmes says it’s a mutually beneficial
relationship, and a way to show off WPI’s excellence.</span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;">“We
have so many repeat project sponsors because they’re so impressed
with the quality of the work that our students do. I can’t tell you
how many times people over there say, ‘Your students are just
great.’”</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Myatt
was in a group that created a feasibility report for a hydroponic
greenhouse that would tap excess electricity from a micro-hydro power
system operated by Māori in the rural town of Horohoro. The
experience had such a profound impact on her life and career path
(she intends to go on to study renewable energy) that she’ll be
going back in winter 2017 for her MQP. Her plan is to work with that
Māori community again to help them design the greenhouse for which
she and her IQP teammates created the feasibility study.</span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">She
recalls a Māori proverb: “What is the most important thing in the
world? It is people, it is people, it is people.” Not, she
emphasized, that people are more important than the natural world and
its creatures, but that they are ultimately responsible for taking
care of it.</span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;">“The
Māori try to be very aware of how they’re impacting their
environment. They’re efficient with their resources,” Myatt says
of the Māori and of kiwis at large. “It’s a very refreshing
viewpoint to experience.”</span></span></div>

journal indexing in which only the top journals in each academic
discipline are included.”</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="color: #333333;">His
inclusion is based largely on his research in the burgeoning field of
green and sustainable supply chains. He has authored and co-authored
hundreds of publications, and his 2004 paper, </span><em><span style="color: #333333;">Relationships
Between Operational Practices and Performance Among Early Adopters of
Green Supply Chain Management Practices in Chinese Manufacturing

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="color: #333333;">Additionally,
Sarkis has been identified by a publication in </span><em><span style="color: #333333;">Scientometrics

the most productive researcher in the field of supply chain

Sarkis. “The field is still young. There are lots of
possibilities.”</span></span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">As
he explains it, the work so far has been highly focused on China, as
the majority of supply chains have ties to the emerging superpower.
Emphasis has been on promoting “good practices,” investigating
various pressures to supply chains, and identifying ways to manage
those supply chains in efficient ways. His research has also focused
on developing models to help businesses and organizations reduce
their environmental footprint, as well as manage hazardous waste
materials use and resource depletion.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="color: #333333;">“</span><span style="color: #333333;">Essentially,
it’s going beyond the financial aspects and the business aspects in
the supply chain to think about ethical, social, and environmental
issues,” he says.</span></span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">More
recently, the work has broadened to include developing suppliers,
helping them to be greener and more proactive about their business
practices when it comes to the environment. “The environment needs
to be considered by industry because of all the damage that’s
occurring,” says Sarkis. As he notes, the question becomes, “How
do you help suppliers become greener or more environmentally sound?”</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Ultimately,
it’s a rewarding field of study he says he plans to keep focusing
on for years to come. “One of the things that attracts me to this
research is that it’s doing good,” he says. “Social good and
impact is an important aspect of this research.”</span></span></div>

Georges Island where both she and her husband were felled in a
botched escape attempt. Her willowy specter, dressed in the garish
gown she was hanged in, has purportedly been seen flitting around
with a lantern, has tapped shoulders, and yelled threats to those
entering the dungeon. Her ghost is said to have choked one horrified
sentinel. Perhaps the darkest detail? She was the one who
accidentally shot her husband while trying to free him — and was
summarily hanged for being a traitor.</span></span></div>

<span style="color: black;"><span style="background: transparent;">Today,
it is a destination that teems with sunbathers, tourists, historical
reenactors, and food carts — but Boston Common has quite a grisly
past. Established in 1634, it was the site of public executions for
more than 175 years. Puritan settlers regularly hanged those believed
to be sinful; today, it is said that the ghosts of their victims can
be seen dangling from the trees, accompanied by the eerie sound of
creaking rope. Some have also reported spotting a weeping woman in
colonial dress, believed to be Quaker martyr Mary Dyer, who was
strung up by the neck in 1660 — reflecting the hypocrisy of the
Puritans who came to America in search of religious freedom.</span></span></span></div>

<span style="color: black;">It
has gone down in history as one of the deadliest nightclub fires: In
November 1942, flames consumed the Cocoanut Grove lounge, killing 492
people and injuring dozens more. Today, all that remains is a
memorial plaque in Bay Village. But its victims are said to linger:
Shadowy souls in burned clothing have been seen aimlessly wandering
the area and the nearby Revere Hotel. Meanwhile, exotic dance
instructor Wendy Reardon, who previously had a studio adjacent to the
site, has on several occasions videotaped glowing shapes that appear
to be moving right along with her – the spirits of Cocoanut Grove
patrons, perhaps, who haven’t yet tired of dancing?</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="color: black;">Boston

country’s founding fathers and mothers, to soldiers, to the

the North End is considered to be the spookiest. Perhaps that’s
because its dead have so often been robbed of their slumber. Grave
diggers and vandals did their work over the years, while torrential
rains exposed coffin lids. Gravestones were ripped out of the ground
to be used as roof tiles, in foundations and road improvement
projects, and, in one grotesque instance, as a baking plate by a
cook. Visitors to Copp’s Hill over the decades have reported
apparitions of little girls, shadows cast by no discernible beings,
as well as orbs, streaks, and blurs. It seems some may not rest as
comfortably as others.</span><span style="background: transparent;">

some of the most famous literary minds of the mid-1800s, including
Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson. And, some say, a few
lesser-knowns congregate there as well. Hawthorne himself wrote of
what he believed to be the ghost of a pastor who could be heard
sighing deeply and who would brashly sweep through the middle of
company. There was also a servant maid who he could hear banging
around the kitchen “at deepest midnight.” More contemporary
visitors have claimed to see a lady in Victorian dress sitting in one
of the Manse’s windows. Others say they’ve heard loud raps and
taps without origin, and, like something out of a James Wan film,
books alighting off shelves and flying across rooms. </span>

But after the Cape Ann population was decimated by the Revolutionary
War, it soon devolved into a haven for the destitute, homeless,
outcasts, and others who shunned (or, in turn, were shunned by)
society. Stories began to circulate about witches who hexed,
murdered, and used dark arts to steal goods from passing carts. By

abandoned, its houses and streets lost to nature; today, the
3,600-acre expanse is preserved by the nonprofit Essex National

inhabitants never truly left — there have been reports of
disturbing sounds such as beating drums, wailing women, and the
howling of dogs and wolves. Adding another layer of the bizarre, the
area is punctuated by giant boulders carved with inspirational
sayings: “Be on time,” “Use your head,” and “Study.” They
are the result of a Great Depression work program — but seem to
hark back to the settlement’s less-fortunate inhabitants. </span></span>

the big day?” “Is it a boy or a girl?” “Do you have any names

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">This
is the typical flurry of questions that follow the announcement:
“We’re having a baby!”</span></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">But
for Martin and Michelle Ervin of Hull, the reaction was a little
different.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Although
they did receive congratulations, one of the first follow-up
questions was: “Well, what about the brand?”</span></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">That’s
because for the past several years, the couple has been building up a
family business, playfully called 9 Lazy Kidz, that features gourmet,
all-natural hot sauces — a planned line of nine in total, each one
named for, and based on the personalities of, the Ervins’ nine
children.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">So
a 10th child — although an exciting and welcome addition to the
family — has created quite the business quandary.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">“This
started out as a hobby,” said Ervin, director of operations for the
Boston law firm Prince Lobel Tye LLP. “I did it as a platform to
share stories about my kids. I enjoy it; the kids enjoy it. What’s
exciting for us now is the new baby, how that impacts the brand, and
building momentum around the brand. To me, it’s a great story.”</span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Helping
them in that quest for brand identity, the family will be the subject
of a case study at Bentley University this fall. Because they don’t
want students to be influenced before the project begins, professors
have asked that the specific details be kept confidential.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">However,
as Ervin explained, it will be a comprehensive process, with students
“doing everything” related to the brand, “soup to nuts, top to
bottom.”</span></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Speaking
of which, an introduction is in order. The “kidz” range in age
from 25-year-old Aisha (pronounced “Asia”) to infant Reign Prince
Ervin, born on June 22, at a healthy 10 pounds, 5 ounces. In between
(and in descending order) are Tiara, Ramon, Martin Jr., Skye, Myles,
Quintin, Malik, and Chance.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border-bottom: 1px solid rgb(21, 136, 171); border-left: none; border-right: none; border-top: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in 0in 0.02in;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="color: black;">So
far, the family has released four hot sauces based around them —
“Aisha’s Entitlement,” “Chance’s Ugh Garlic Sauce,” “Q’s
Spicy Mango Sauce,” and “Skye’s Sweet Apple Heat.” Although
the couple aren’t doing much to promote or evolve the brand, the
sauces can still be purchased online, at </span><a href="http://www.9lazykidz.com./"><span style="color: #1588ab;"><span style="text-decoration: none;">www.9lazykidz.com.</span></span></a><span style="color: black;"> Ervin
estimates that they’ve sold about 7,000 so far, at local retailers,
fairs, festivals, and events, as well as through their website.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">The
upcoming Bentley case study isn’t the first time the family has
sought help wrangling the brand. Last year, they took part in the Ad
Club’s Brand-a-thon, during which they were paired up with Salem,
N.H.-based marketing agency 36 Creative.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Over
a 72-hour weekend, the firm strategized and ended up suggesting a
change to the name “Nine Lazy Kids” (no numeral or “z”),
simplifying the busy colorful labels, and switching the design scheme
from actual photos of the children on their namesake sauce to more
timeless illustrations.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">“There
was so much playfulness that they lost some of that established feel,
that feeling of trust and honesty,” said Trent Sanders, managing
partner of 36 Creative. He reflected that “their family is just
amazing — there’s some system to the madness.”</span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Considering
the recent developments — and expansion — in the family, the
Ervins haven’t yet put those suggestions into practice. They’re
waiting on the Bentley research to make their next strategic move.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">As
for Sanders’s thoughts on changing the name altogether? “It is
tempting to ask the question,” he said, suggesting that, in lieu of
a name change, the story behind the brand can be told differently.
“It’s all about telling the story and how you do it as a brand.”</span></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">In
the meantime, Ervin has taken more than a month off from work,
allowing his wife to focus her full attention on the baby, while he’s
temporarily assumed the day-to-day duties of the seven “kidz”
still at home (wake-up calls, chores, food preparation,
chauffeuring).</span></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">“I’m
enjoying being a dad for the time that I have. I’m trying to make
the most out of it,” he said. “I’ve been very fortunate that I
get to be part of these 10 kids’ lives.”</span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">And
what about the possibility of 11 Lazy Kidz?</span></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Ervin
answered without hesitation: “This is definitely the last. There
will be no 11th. I don’t think I have it in me.”</span></span></div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">

of us have a certain image of Nantucket (as it has been beatifically
portrayed in many a movie and the affable 90s sitcom “Wings”):
Independently wealthy; a haven for seekers of a simpler life; quaint
artisan shops, yachts and fishing boats bobbing just off its shores.</span></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">While
there’s no doubt the small island just 30 miles off of Cape Cod is
stunningly beautiful, thrumming with tourism, and a desirable
attraction for the well-to-do, it isn’t without its socio-economic
issues.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">In
fact, because housing prices on Nantucket are six times the median on
the nearby mainland, about half the people who call it their
full-time home struggle to afford housing.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><span style="color: #333333;">“</span><span style="color: #333333;">It’s
a major problem for the island,” says Dominic Golding, associate
teaching professor and director of the Nantucket Project Center.
“There’s a major shortage of housing, and the housing that is
available is extremely expensive.”</span></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">But
with some help from WPI, it’s a challenge the island is (at least a
little bit) more equipped to tackle.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Based
on extensive research by an IQP team, Housing Nantucket, an island
nonprofit, has been able to secure certification as a Community
Development Corporation (CDC). That ultimately opens it up to receive
support from the state Community Investment Tax Credit (CITC)
program; it is now able to offer $150,000 in state tax credits to
financial backers, provided it can fundraise at least $300,000 a
year.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Essentially,
as Golding explained, it’s a “carrot” to potential donors.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Any
money raised through the CITC program will go directly toward
building and maintaining affordable rental units on the island.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Housing
Nantucket, which has been around since 1994, serves year-round
residents who earn between 50 and 150 percent of the Area Median
Income. According to the agency, homeownership is “prohibitive”
to about 90 percent of year-round residents.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">As
Golding explained, it has a significant impact on the island’s
economy: Although 10,000 to 12,000 people live there throughout the
year, that swells to about 60,000 in the summer with the influx of
tourists and part-time residents. That increase equals more available
jobs--but few affordable (or available) places for workers to live.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><span style="color: #333333;">“</span><span style="color: #333333;">Every
person I talked to during my trip to Nantucket agreed that housing
has been, and still is, a very important topic that needs to be
addressed and soon,” says Nhi Phan ’17, a biomedical engineering
major who worked on the project. “I'm looking forward to seeing how
Housing Nantucket is going to push forward in the coming years and
how this project has helped them do so.”</span></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Over
a 14-week period last year, Phan and two fellow students spent time
on and off the island researching its housing situation as part of
their IQP. That process involved learning about the CDC certification
process, querying locals and community leaders, and interviewing
other Massachusetts CDCs about their roles in their own communities,
their outreach efforts, and their operations. The project culminated
with an assessment of Housing Nantucket’s services and community
involvement, along with an outline on how to apply for CITCs, as well
as proposed recommendations to help secure CDC status.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><span style="color: #333333;">“</span><span style="color: #333333;">What
surprised me most was learning that housing is truly prohibitive to
the majority of Nantucket residents,” says Elizabeth Beasley ’17,
an actuarial mathematics major who also worked on the project.
“Housing prices on Nantucket are extremely high, as one might
expect, but there isn’t a range of low cost alternatives. So the
work that Housing Nantucket does to provide affordable housing
options is vitally important.”</span></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Ultimately,
the project was beneficial not just for the residents, but for her
and her fellow students--specifically by illustrating how great an
impact an IQP can have on a community.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><span style="color: #333333;">“</span><span style="color: #333333;">I'm
glad that I had this opportunity to learn not only how to coordinate
as a team, but also to contribute to something much bigger than just
one term project,” she says, noting the exposure to real-word
problems that can be tackled with theory, practice and “great team
work. I'll carry these lessons with me as I start my career, and
remember that the work I do will impact not just a community, but
real people.”</span></span></span></div>

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large; line-height: 0.14in;">When
Tim Rollins arrived in the Bronx as a 26-year-old in the early ‘80s,
it was, as he describes, “on fire” — literally, of course, due
to the conflagrations that consumed the borough for an entire decade,
but also culturally. It was an electric, inspiring and frightening
backdrop for what would ultimately become his life’s work.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 0.22in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">After
growing up in rural Maine and attending the University of Maine in
Augusta, he was recruited to “the toughest ghetto in America,” as
he described it, to develop a curriculum fusing art, reading and
writing for “at risk” youth.</span></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 0.22in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">What
eventually resulted was the group “Kids of Survival” (K.O.S.),
which over time morphed into a traveling workshop that has produced
art for prestigious museums and exhibits all over the world. This
fall, Tim Rollins and K.O.S. are bringing their unique and inspiring
perspective, process and story to the Portland Museum of Art (PMA) in
two special ways.</span></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 0.22in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The
first: “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” — a 13’ x 34’ work
acquired by the PMA that will find a permanent home in the museum’s
Selma Wolf Black Great Hall — will ultimately serve as a welcome
for all visitors as they enter. The second: “Unbound: Tim Rollins
and K.O.S.,” a special exhibition composed of works inspired by
classic literature, poetry and music.</span></span></div>

of it as a rite of STEM passage.</span></span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Every
summer, Camp Reach welcomes a select group of rising seventh grade
girls to campus for a comprehensive program focusing on discovery and
hands-on engineering.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">This
year, the award-winning program is celebrating a milestone
anniversary—20 years exposing young women to the myriad
possibilities available to them in the science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics disciplines.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;">“I
learned that I could go out and become an engineer,” says Lizzy
Fitch ’16, of Princeton, a former camper who now serves as program
coordinator. “Camp Reach sparked my interest in the STEM fields and
is what eventually helped me decide to attend WPI. It gave me the
confidence to become a woman in STEM.”</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Each
year, 30 girls entering the 7th grade are chosen to attend Camp
Reach, a two-week, selective residential program comprising of
hands-on design activities and academic workshops. The camp will be
held this year from July 24 to August 5.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">With
its proven track record, the program has earned significant
distinctions; most notably, in 2011, President Barack Obama named it
one of 17 recipients of the Presidential Award for Excellence in
Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">It
continues its mission this year with an immersive program. As Fitch
explained, the biggest element over the 14 days is an in-depth design
project. Girls are split into three teams of 10, each group also
comprising of a middle school teacher and teaching assistants. They
are then given a problem to solve by a sponsoring local nonprofit—in
the past, those have included Friendly House/Interfaith Hospitality
Network and Regional Environmental Council (REC), among others.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">After
workshopping, brainstorming, designing, and tinkering, they then
present their findings to the sponsors in a closing ceremony.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Fitch,
who earned her BS in management engineering this year and is studying
for her MS, recalls the particular gratification in that design
project when she was a camper. “I thought it was great that we got
to give back to the different nonprofit Worcester organizations while
still learning about the engineering design process,” she says.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">She
was 12 when she participated in Camp Reach; she initially heard about
it through her sixth grade math teacher and, as she puts it, “I
immediately knew I had to apply.”</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Meanwhile,
Camp Reach also includes afternoon workshops focusing on different
engineering principles day-to-day, Fitch says. And in the evenings?
It’s time for a little bit of fun; the girls get to design their
own dream shoes and newspaper dresses, à la “Project Runway.”</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">One
of the most important elements, Fitch says, is that the young campers
are exposed to influential females to look up to—most notably
teaching assistants, or camp staff members who are in the 11th and
12th grades. “A large part of Camp Reach is providing the 30
campers with as many female role models as possible,” she explains.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Ultimately,
she says, “I hope that the campers will gain confidence to pursue
STEM-related careers in the future. I want them to understand that
they can become engineers and scientists if they want to, and that
they should be proud to be interested in science, technology,
engineering, and math.”</span></span></div>

years, he hustled juggling a full schedule of classes with a
full-time, second-shift custodial job. And most of the time in
between (what little of it he had) was spent on his coursework and
his Major Qualifying Project; he even picked up the occasional
plastering gig, too.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">But
Michael Vaudreuil—maybe the name sounds familiar?—has finally
gotten his payoff. The custodian-turned-engineer, whose story went
viral after WPI’s 148th commencement ceremony on May 14, has
accepted a position at Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut. As of July
11, he will be an engineer with the aerospace manufacturer’s
Production Integrated Product Team (PIPT).</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">“I’m
going to quote one of my favorite movies—they made me an offer I
couldn’t refuse,” the 54-year-old says with a laugh (and shame on
you if you don’t get the reference). “I’m looking forward to
the satisfaction and fulfillment that will come with the job.”</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">It’s
a fitting start to a new chapter of his life.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;">Vaudreuil’s
story—enduring setback after professional setback, losing his home,
his life savings, and for a while, his hope—has resonated with
millions. From </span><em>NBC
Nightly News, </em>to
the UK’s <em>Independent,
</em>dozens
of media outlets around the world picked up the story about the
middle-aged custodian who earned his mechanical engineering degree
from the university he cleaned at night. One video of him graduating
garnered more than 11 million views.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">“I
was certainly welcoming of it, because I thought it would help
networking-wise,” he says of the media attention. “To the degree
that it took off was a bit surprising. It was almost an out-of-body
experience. You see this happen, things go viral—now it’s
happening to me.”</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Following
his segment on <em>NBC
Nightly News, </em>four
people from Pratt & Whitney reached out to him on the same day,
independently of each other. It was flattering, he recalled, because
he could tell they saw something in him. Tom Prete, vice president,
Engineering, at Pratt & Whitney, said the firm is proud to hire
the recent WPI grad.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">“Pratt
& Whitney engineers design and develop products that change the
world. As we continue to grow our global workforce, we are proud to
add Michael Vaudreuil to our talented team,” says Prete. “Our
employees are critical to our success and the reason we are in the
midst of one of the most exciting chapters in our company’s
history.”</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">“I
feel like I kind of won the lottery,” Vaudreuil says.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Still,
he hasn’t let any of that deter him from his goal. “I really
haven’t lost sight of the eye-on-the-prize type of thinking,” he
says. “Getting that job is always what it’s been about. That’s
the moment I fought for, for so hard, all of those years.”</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; orphans: 1; padding: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Right
now, he’s still working as a custodian at WPI—which he expects to
continue through June—but his Auburn home is up for sale and he’ll
soon be relocating to Connecticut. Both he and his wife, Joyce, (whom
he credits with supporting him wholeheartedly throughout the trying
and emotional process of earning his degree) are looking forward to
the move.</span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; orphans: 1; padding: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">In
his new position, he’ll be working in the Hot Section Engineering
division at Pratt & Whitney, which deals with jet engine
combustion chambers, and turbine and exhaust systems. For him, it was
a perfect fit, because years ago, he earned an associate’s degree
in aeronautical technology from Wentworth Institute of Technology.</span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; orphans: 1; padding: 0in;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Ultimately—beyond
moving on with his new life and his new job—Vaudreuil says he hopes
the media attention helps change the perception of older graduates
and job candidates.</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; orphans: 1; padding: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;">“This
last year was filled with a lot of anticipation and excitement, but
also trepidation,” he recalls. “The reality was sinking in that I
was going to be a 54-year-old graduate.”</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; orphans: 1; padding: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Sometimes,
he notes, the life experiences of older job candidates can get
overlooked or taken for granted, or there’s a stereotype that their
better days are behind them and they’re just riding it out to
retirement.</span></div>
<div style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0in; orphans: 1; padding: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">But
as is clear with Vaudreuil, never assume, never underestimate—and
never give up. “Nobody’s going to question my work ethic, my
energy level or my desire,” he says.</span></div>
